Flower Care & Growing Resources

Extending Vase Life of Cut Flowers

What we do before you receive your cut flowers:

  • We harvest flowers in the early morning so they are maximally hydrated naturally.

  • We use tablets to disinfect the water that the stems then hydrate in for at least 24 hours in a cooler. This kills bacteria that can block the uptake of water into the stem.

  • Flowers are conditioned in a cooler before being handled or processed for customers.

What our customers can do to extend the vase life of their cut-flowers:

  • Prepare a clean vase with cool water and add the flower food that is included with your purchase.

  • Trim your stems and remove any leaves/foliage that would sit below that water line.

  • Change the water, and re-trim the stems every 2-3 days.

  • Place the flowers in a cool area away from the sun, ripening fruit, and heavy drafts.

Note: Different varieties of flowers naturally have a shorter or longer vase life, regardless of how well they are cared for. Flowers like lisianthus and ranunculus tend to have a longer vase life, whereas flowers like dahlias and zinnias tend to have a shorter vase life comparatively.

Canadian Seed Suppliers

Interested in growing your own blooms in the backyard? There are so many resources out there. It can be hard to manage the volume of resources available online. Here are some of our ‘go-to’ growing resources we have had success with. We have also included some of my favorite Canadian seed sources. We grow our flowers from seed and do not import trays from the US.

We order seed from the following Canadian suppliers and have had both reliable seed germination and great customer service.

  • Olive Seed Company

  • William Dam Seed

  • Lily Stone Gardens

  • AG Flower Seeds

  • Circle Farms

  • Ecoseedbank

  • Fleurelle Flower Farm
